‘Please don’t break my heart’ by Sandy Smith, August 2007.
The only solution [to social media addiction] is not one that most people want to face, which is to become lovers of solitude and silence… I love to spend time alone in my room, and in my ideal world the first hour of every day would be in bed, writing down thoughts, harvesting dreams, before anyone phones or you have any internet access. I write on paper, cause if you write on a laptop, it’s too tempting to go online. You look up a word and then an hour later you remember why you went on…

This is the reason I’m moving a little more writing to pen and paper - less distraction!
I think this image really awesome, even if it is (as the text says) only practice. The hair - the pose - the way the shadows are rendered…all interesting!
I am trying to better my skill.
It’s just slow.
Because there isn’t enough coffee.
Yes.
(I’M SORRY YOU GUYS, I KNOW I’M BORING, PLEASE DON’T LEAVE.)
As you get older it is harder to have heroes, but it is sort of necessary. -Ernest Hemingway
I’m not old, but I’m getting older and I’m hurting for heroes. Once you leave school, learning is no longer structured. You have to figure things out for yourself. You still want to learn because learning means growing and growing is the most enjoyable way to live, but it’s gotten a lot more difficult.

I’m perpetually discontent with everything, which is what keeps my work going… It’s what keeps me up at night and makes me work harder.
This. This is awesome.

You know what’s really awesome? When I see other people announcing that they’re doing something awesome. Reading a tweet like that makes me feel like doing something awesome is even more important because it puts me in a category with people whose work I really admire.
:)
With Calligraphy, it’s easy to believe you’re doing something special. There are people who buy a pen, try to copy some letters from a manual, then go to their friends and take compliments. They also call themselves “calligraphers.” They can do this easily becuase most people are in the digital era, and have no basis to compare the quality of this kind of work.
I think that’s not honest. You have to compare your work to the masters, and ask yourself if the work is really strong in that context.
—Luca Barcellona, interviewed by Eben Sorkin in Codex
I am really enjoying my copy of Codex, but I find that I want to read just one article at a time. Read it again and again, think about it, make some drawings about it maybe…
(photo by Luca Barcellona, from his Flickr - I’ve noticed that so many people have already taken lots of pictures of their copies of Codex - it really is beautiful and their images do it so much more justice than anything I could get out of my camera. :)
I can see this video as an amazing demonstration of awesome skill, dedication and practice, but I can also see it as an artifact. The documentation of a performance, along with the energy of the audience and that one-chance-for-this-show run-through that’s happening on the stage - it has a special kind of feeling that you can’t get from a music video, movement shot in the studio or even by seeing it live.
…I know you’re busy being awesome and all…
I want to be awesome too :)
A comment on this youtube channel that I found by following random related-video tangents http://www.youtube.com/user/jaaaaaaa
(I wonder why I can’t link directly to a comment?)
Apparently I don’t have the focus for really good-quality practice, but I can noodle and doodle around for hours. I tried a few times to write the word “many” but I kept writing “made” or “mad” instead. Seriously, it seems like a simple thing to think of a word and then write it down, but no - this happened to me, like four times. :p
Awesome.
